Exhibition “New Ecologies” – Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz

As part of the public art exhibition “New Ecologies” at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, students from the Nevin Aladağ class at the Dresden University of Fine Arts were invited to develop works. One of the selected works is the artistic intervention “Heat Islands”.
In the LfULG research project “Hitzeinseln Sachsen”, ThINK GmbH investigated the heat pollution of Chemnitz city-wide in high resolution. The poster motifs in this work are based on the heat and shade maps developed by ThINK GmbH and were translated into digitally modeled meadow areas. These motifs are displayed on the city’s advertising pillars. “Heat Islands” thus combines scientific data analysis with artistic exploration and creates an awareness of the need for cooling urban areas.
The data also forms the basis for the city of Chemnitz’s heat action plan.
First series of motifs: Theaterstraße 56 / Kaßbergauffahrt
21 June – 18 June 21 – July 18, 2024
The first series of three partial motifs illuminates the specific heat islands in the immediate vicinity of the selected advertising pillar. The visual representation makes the local climate visually tangible.
Second series of motifs: different locations
19 July – 29 September 2024
The continuation of the series of motifs focuses on the cooler outskirts of the city of Chemnitz. This series of motifs will be displayed alternately on various advertising pillars in the city. This geographical extension draws attention to the different temperature zones within the city and emphasizes the importance of spatial planning and vegetation. This second series of motifs is supported by the sponsorship of the Thuringian Institute for Sustainability and Climate (ThINK GmbH).
